Program Description

The Caregiver Training program is a government-approved certificate designed for individuals who want to pursue a career providing professional child care in homes and community settings across British Columbia.

This program is approved by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU), BC’s Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training — and eligible for StudentAid BC financial assistance.

Program Introduction

Caregivers play a critical role in providing safe, nurturing care for children in home and community settings. They work alongside families and child care professionals to deliver compassionate, professional care programs for children.

This program offers foundational knowledge and skills in child development, safety and hygiene, activity planning, and professional communication with families.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program, graduates will have developed the necessary knowledge and skills to work as a Caregiver:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a caregiver and child care provider
  • Support children’s physical, emotional, and developmental needs
  • Create safe, stimulating, and age-appropriate environments
  • Apply health, hygiene, and safety practices in child care settings
  • Recognize and respond to signs of developmental delays or child abuse
  • Plan and implement activities that promote child growth and learning
  • Communicate professionally with parents, guardians, and care teams

Maintain ethical and professional caregiving standards

  • High school graduation (Grade 12) or equivalent — or mature student status (age 19 or older)
  • English proficiency at Grade 10 level or higher, or equivalent assessment (IELTS 5.0+)
  • Successful admissions interview
