The French as a Second Language (FSL) B1–B2 program targets intermediate to upper-intermediate learners aiming to reach proficiency in professional and academic settings. It focuses on complex grammar, increased fluency, spontaneous conversation, and understanding detailed, abstract texts. Courses emphasize writing complex sentences, debating, and nuanced expression. Relevant speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills are covered.

Program Introduction

This program is designed for independent users of French at the intermediate level. Students will develop confidence in day-to-day communication and progress toward professional and academic fluency in French.

Assessment Methods

Formative assessments are used throughout courses (online discussions, student demonstrations, quizzes, activities). Summative evaluations include assignments, projects, essays, demonstrations, quizzes, and exams. A passing grade of 65% is required for each course. Attendance requirement: 80%.

  • 18 years of age or older
  • English language proficiency (see below)
  • Program is delivered in English and French

Applicants must meet ONE of the following:

  • Completion of grades 9–11 including English 11 (grade C or higher) from a country where English is a principal language, OR
  • 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited English-language institution, OR
